How to Check If ChatGPT Recommends Your Business
The honest way to find out where you stand today, why a single query is not a measurement, and what a real check requires.
The direct way to check is also the most misleading if done once: ask ChatGPT the question a real buyer would ask, phrased the way they'd ask it, and see whether your business is named. The problem is that a single query proves very little — AI answers vary run to run, and a good result once is not the same as a reliable result.
Why one query isn't a measurement
Generative answers are non-deterministic: the same prompt sent twice can return different names, different orderings, or omit a business entirely on one run and include it on the next. A real check runs the same intent multiple times per engine and reports the rate, not a single yes-or-no.
Engines disagree with each other
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity are built on different training data, different retrieval partnerships, and different update cadences. A business can be reliably named by Perplexity and reliably absent from ChatGPT for the identical query. Checking only the engine you personally use tells you nothing about the other four your buyers might be using instead.
What a real check requires
A credible answer needs: the buyer-phrased intents your category actually gets asked (not your own marketing language), every major engine your buyers use, multiple runs per engine per intent, and a plain rule for what counts as a real mention versus a vague or incorrect one. Anything short of that is a spot check, useful as a gut sense but not a baseline to make decisions against.
